What could go wrong and what could go right when you try to unravel the mysteries of the Universe, one AI algorithm at a time?

Elon Musk, the serial entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter, has announced the formation of a new company, xAI, with the ambitious goal of understanding the nature of the Universe.
The company, registered in Nevada last April, is the latest in Musk’s growing portfolio of innovative ventures.
The xAI team is led by Musk and includes eleven experts who have previously worked at leading AI development companies such as OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and DeepMind.
The team’s supervisor is Dan Hendrycks, the current director of the Center for AI Safety. This San Francisco-based nonprofit organization recently published a letter comparing the risks of AI to those of nuclear weapons and pandemics and hypothesizing the extinction of humanity if AI is not adequately regulated.
You probably remember that some months ago, Musk was among a group of over a thousand experts who signed a letter calling companies and governments to halt the training of generative AI, like ChatGPT, for six months to prevent economic and social upheavals.

We know that the xAI team will be introduced during a live audio event on July 14, and Elon has previously stated on Twitter that he intends to create an “extremely curious” AI.
“The best thing I can do, from an AI safety perspective, is to create one that can understand the nature of the universe,”
“I think xAI will be in favor of humanity in this sense: humanity is much more interesting than non-humanity.”- Elon Musk
When asked on Twitter whether the AI will have consciousness, Musk responded:
“I often wonder where consciousness begins, as we go from one cell to ~35 trillion cells. If the standard model is correct, quarks and leptons become ‘conscious’ no later than ~13.8 billion years from the birth of the Universe, assuming there are no sentient aliens.”
According to the company’s website, xAI will actively work with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies to achieve its mission.[…]
