How can AI turn a traditional jewelry practice into a lab for sustainability? In my Zurich studio, intelligent tools help transform heirlooms, lab-grown gems and SDG-inspired design into sustainable, circular jewelry.

It began unexpectedly at Christmas 2022. During a family dinner, my brother, an early AI enthusiast who always keeps me up to speed with new tools, mentioned something that sounded quite abstract to me: artificial intelligence. At first, I dismissed it as a technical gimmick. Only later, when I saw his first AI-generated images, did I realize its potential.
For someone who has spent decades in branding and design, that moment was quite a revelation. I immediately understood that this wasn’t just another digital trend but rather a fundamental shift in how ideas take shape. Within weeks, I was testing AI tools — and the impact on my creative process was profound.
What surprised me most was not the speed involved, but the dialogue AI offered. It became my creative partner, challenging, provoking, and enhancing the imagination.
From curiosity to capability
Today, three years on, AI forms an integral part of my daily design practice. At my Zurich-based studio, we use AI to accelerate concept development, visual storytelling, and 3D visualization — from corporate branding to designing digital campaigns. To be exact, AI supports, rather than replaces, the creative process. It helps translate research into content, to give intuition a clear form, and allows complex ideas to be visualized earlier on.
How AI Shapes My Creative Workflow as a Brand und Jewellry Designer
AI supports my creative workflow from the first spark of inspiration to the final, sustainable piece. Midjourney enables me to explore visual directions and imagine new forms for existing heirloom stones. ChatGPT and Gemini help turn intuition into clear storytelling. With Artlist video tool, clients can emotionally experience a jewelry piece before it even exists – as a moving, narrated vision, which personally gives my much joy. And when it comes to transforming concepts into 3d models for casting, I work with Fusion 360 and Rhinoceros 3D, enabling STEP- and Rhino-based CAD workflows.
“I firmly believe that when creativity is guided by values and supported by intelligent systems, innovation becomes more than progress – it becomes purposive.”
Designing with a sharp focus
In recent years, my work has evolved to unite design and sustainability. As we collaborated more with foundations and NGOs, it felt only natural to extend this approach into include studio jewelry, creating pieces that stand for both beauty and responsibility.
The result is the SDG Inspired Memory Ring, inspired by the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. I first came across them six years ago at the SDG Tent during the World Economic Forum in Davos. Each of the 17 conflict-free gemstones represents one of the goals, and 17% of the profits support SDG-aligned initiatives such as Grace Impact’s Good Water Project in Uganda. The ring project took also part in the 2024 UN SDG Action Awards – a small and yet profoundly meaningful contribution to a larger global movement. https://sabineraab.com/sdg-inspired-memory-ring
Circular Elegance
The idea of circularity in jewelry design was likewise instilled with life thanks to something deeply personal. Some years ago, my godmother gifted me a vintage ring from the 1960s – a piece in yellow gold featuring a green tourmaline. It didn’t fit me, and the design felt outdated, yet the stone itself was stunning. That was the spark that set the ball rolling: Instead of leaving it to sit in a drawer, I redesigned it to create a contemporary piece that I loved to wear. And that moment marked the beginning of my re-design process for heirloom jewelry.
Today, this is precisely the approach I apply on behalf of clients who bring me their inherited pieces – often with emotional stories attached. Together, we enter a co-creation process: They share their vision, I translate this into design concepts, and AI helps gives the result wonderful visual form. I can even present each client their piece as a 3D video before production begins. It’s an experience that combines craftsmanship, technology, and emotion – and it’s one that brings me immense fulfillment as a designer.
In conclusion: AI as strategic enabler
AI does not threaten creativity – it augments it.
In design, AI enables iteration before material use and fostering responsible experimentation. It makes the invisible visible – helping designers, brands, and clients make informed, at best ethical choices.
Hidden Treasures – Why Sustainable Jewelry Matters
In Switzerland alone, the average person owns around CHF 2,380 worth of gold jewelry, much of which does not get worn. Reworking these existing pieces preserves both the material and emotional value — an act of sustainability that infuses a personal heritage with a contemporary relevance.
A recent French market study found that one in four items of jewelry sold over the counter is incorrectly certified or falsely declared, often to inflate its market price. Redesigning heirloom jewelry constitutes a transparent and ethical alternative – one that is authentic, responsible, and emotionally enduring.
Equally, lab-grown diamonds demonstrate how technology can align beauty with ethics: no mining, no child labor, no conflict – only innovation shaped by conscience.
